» The city of Carthage is located on the eastern side of Lake Tunis across from the center of Tunis. it was founded in 814 BC by Phoenician colonists under the leadership of Elissa (Queen Dido)
Its grandiose and tragic fate led it first to be prosperous at the beginning of the 3 rd century BC .It was the most prosperous economic mediterranean country.Carthage underwent three Punic wars against Rome ( 264-146) that led to its complete destruction. It was restored by the Romans in 44BC. Under the dynasty of the emperor August Carthage became the most prosperous African city. It went through different civilizations: Devastated by the vandals in 440 and rebuilt by the Byzantine in 533.It was finally conquered by the Arabs in 698.Carthage was then dismantled and played a role in the emergence of Tunis. The archeological site of Carthage: the impressive vestiges of the thermal baths and the two punic harbours. They were designed by UNESCO as part of mankind cultural heritage. |
